Activity Levels

In an effort to give you some guidance on how active each Adventure Network International program might be, we have prepared a table explaining the activity level of each journey. If you have questions as to your ability to participate, please call us directly and we can discuss this with you in person.

Level 1 - Easy
None of our level 1 trips are particularly difficult, but travel itself can be wearing, and you'll get more enjoyment out of any trip if you are in good physical condition. For all our journeys you will be asked to complete and return a medical form. This will be screened by our doctor. If there are questions we will contact you directly.  For trips rated level 1, many of the activities in and around Patriot Hills are optional. All of our Level 1 programs allow for you to be as active or inactive as you wish.

Level 2 - Easy to Moderate
Level 2 programs have a wider range of activities and include more active travel.   This also includes trips with short hikes of two to three hours or optional walks at higher elevations.

Level 3 - Moderate
Level 3 programs include more of our active trips involving hiking over moderate terrain, usually—but not always—with vehicle support. Elevations are usually less than 10,000 feet and there may be some long hiking days, wilderness camping, or other mandatory activity. On many trips, you can elect to skip a day's activity, depending on logistics. You need to be in good health and physical condition to enjoy these trips, with adequate muscular strength, cardiovascular endurance, and good balance. If you are not optimally conditioned, we recommend that you start a training program at least three months before departure, gradually increasing the intensity and duration. We are available to suggest a suitable training program. Just ask.

Level 4 - Moderate to Strenuous
Level 4 trips include skiing, hiking and trekking trips where you will be active for between three to six hours a day over steeper or more rugged terrain or where elevations may exceed 10,000 feet—often several days in a row. You need to be in excellent health and physical condition to enjoy these trips, with adequate muscular strength, cardiovascular endurance, and good balance. If you are not optimally conditioned, we recommend that you start a training program at least three months before departure, gradually increasing the intensity and duration. Talk to us about preparing a training program to suit your activity.

Level 5 - Strenuous
Our most demanding trips including climbing, skiing, hiking and trekking five to eight hours a day, on overland and mountainous terrain and some may be at elevations above 15,000 feet. Exercise at high altitude compounds the physiologic stress. For those on a climbing program you will require additional high altitude mountaineering experience, plus technical rock and advanced glacier/ice climbing skills. In addition, high altitude may create discomfort and symptoms of illness that you do not experience while exercising at lower elevations, such as shortness of breath, restlessness or sleeplessness at night, and headaches. You must have some experience with exercising at high altitude. You need to be in excellent health and top physical condition to enjoy such an experience, with adequate cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and excellent balance. We recommend that you start a moderate training program six to eight months before departure, and then slowly build up to a more strenuous level.
