The Scott Expedition begins their trek to the Pole

Ben Saunders and Tarka L’Herpiniere of The Scott Expedition have begun their 1,800 mile (2,900 km) journey from Ross Island to the South Pole and back. The team arrived at McMurdo Sound on October 24, after a long flight from Punta Arenas, via King George Island and Union Glacier. They landed at the McMurdo sea ice runway and from there continued north to their Cape Evans start point. The next day they set off southward on ski. We wish them the best of luck. Richard Parks Reveals Project X

After 12 months of preparation, Richard Parks has finally revealed the details of Project X. Project X is a two-part quest, which will see Richard attempt to complete the fastest and longest solo, unsupported and unassisted Antarctic polar expeditions in history. This season (2013) Richard will attempt to break Christian Eide’s Antarctic speed record of 24 days, 1 hour and 13 minutes. Eide set his record on 13th January 2011, after covering an average of 47km (29 miles) per day and skiing an incredible 90km (56 miles) on his final day. Parks aims to complete the 1,150km (715 mile) journey in 23 days. Following his Antarctic speed record expedition, 2014/2015 will then see Richard attempt to complete the longest solo, unsupported and unassisted Antarctic journey in history.  This expedition will also have a unique twist, which is to be revealed next year. The South Pole Epic (Bike Ride)

Daniel Burton, owner of Epic Biking will ride a bike from Hercules Inlet on the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole. If he suceeds, he will be the first person to ride a bike from the coast to the South Pole. Daniel wants to inspire people to get out and be active. For Daniel that is biking, so he hopes that his trip to the South Pole will inspire others to get out and ride a bike. Whether it’s biking or some other activity, Daniel emphasizes that the most important thing is to find an activity that you enjoy and you can do on a regular basis. Daniel also encourages people to donate to the American Diabetes Association, or to get involved with some other diabetes, cancer, or health related foundation. For more information about Daniel’s expedition, or ways to donate, see http://epicsouthpole.blogspot.ca/
