Overview

Dronning Maud Land is one of Antarctica’s least explored regions, though one of the most attractive. Large peaks and monoliths rise out of the snowy terrain – they are the color of dark bricks and, from a distance, their exterior is smooth yet also jagged. Nowhere in Antarctica, or indeed on Earth, looks quite the same.

Adventure Network International provided logistics for the first-ever commercially supported climbing trip to this area in 1996.  We can tailor-make climbing expeditions and ski touring journeys to this incredible region of Antarctica. Contact us if you wish to explore this paradise at the edge of the Indian Ocean.

FACT FILE
  • Dronning Maud Land is located at 72°30'S, 12°E on the edge of
the Indian Ocean and is one of the major sectors of East Antarctica. Named by Hjalmar Riiser-Larsen in 1931 for the Queen of Norway, it was claimed by Norway on 14 January 1939.
  • The standard of climbs ranges from moderate to extreme, from rock to ice. The rock is good, offering solid placement of protection. Snowfall is low, the weather generally stable, and you can take advantage of the 24 hours of daylight.
  • Peaks range in height from 1500 m (5,000 ft) to 3148 m (10,328 ft). Incredible rock and ice peaks soar out of the polar plateau to create a paradise for climbers.
